Post Would this be any good to us? PE2850
Ok, so I have managed to purchase the old server from work when they replaced it! I collected it today and finally have had my first decent look at it.

Its missing its Embedded Remote Administrator (ERA) Card, the floppy disk and the DAT72 drive. Presume these have been transfered too the new server.

Its came with 2 sticks of DDR2 512mb. One Xeon of unknown speed and three Fujitsu SCSI Ultra320 147gb 10k drives.

It also came with a COA for Server 2003 std 4cli 1-4cpu stuck to the case, but no DVD.

Suggestions for cheap upgrades or how to even get started to configure? Making no illusions, I am totally out of my depth with configuring a games server.

Ultimately, i am looking to get this co-hosted, but still investigating the cost of that! This would be our own dedicated server.

I really need to start paying more attention to these forums.

A quick google indicates that the server should be of a reasonable spec':

* CPU is a Xeon and would be at least 2.8Ghz - more than good enough for crunching numbers
* 10K discs are a bonus (speedy map loading etc.)
* As jim pointed out, memory is cheap and definitely worth chucking in. Bear in mind you need to fill it with ECC registered memory (and usually in matched pairs) - this carries a price premium over desktop ram, but you should be able to pick sticks up for about £40 / GB

Unfortunately I don't think it's going to be a go'er due to the costs of colocation. First and foremost is cost: figure anywhere from £50 - £250 a month + VAT : at the lower end you're going to get zero bandwidth allowance and zero support though. Coloc'ing is only really cheap when you can buy space by the quarter of a cabinet. Secondly, you also need to consider supporting it - if you've gone for a cheap provider who has not given you access to the power control on the distribution bar, who is the volunteer who has to drive to telehouse in the docklands at 4am to reboot the server?

No updates with this. Its just sitting in the cupboard after (as iAn pointed out) I found out the price of co location. Its about £70 a month with tiny amounts of data useage. Also, one of the drives was DOA. I needed some funds so sold the other two drives. So currently I have a server with no drive that I might resurrect later or sell off if it hits the fan!

Until my job problems are sorted its a non starter. :(

I contacted Cavy via PM a while ago with no response :( Hope hes doing ok.

What brand / model is the drive? If it's one of an "enterprise" class, they usually come with quite awesome warranties (at least 5 years if not 10). Assuming it's in warranty, you can usually get them swapped out for free (except the cost of posting it out to them)
